Poetry is written in lines, as verses; it has a fluid margin.
When we want to write poems,we usually set out by writing verses, with one line-not to be confused with sentence-following another. Thus,no matter how wide the page, the line remains as we intended. Yet,we must keep in mind that writing a poem is not as simple as it may seem. It is not merely a process of compiling lines with flowery words. Writing a poem means exploring. It means not only recording what we think or feel but investigating those thought, digging deep, striving for a new shivery understanding. Therefore a poet must train his/her “eyes” to see what is unseen; to search for the particular, mot the general;to dive, not to swim.
Parallel to that, the simplest way to get an insight of the unseen or the particular is to read(and reread) poems we like, the poems that give us a new understanding about a thing and encourage us to write our own.Elizabeth Bishop said,”Read a lot of poetry-all the time…. Read Campion, Hebert, Pope,Tennyson,Coleridge-anything at all almost that’s good, from the past-until you find out what you really like,by yourself. Even if you try imitate it exactly-it will come out quite differently…”
In sum,to write a poem is not merely to express our feeling and/or thoughts in the way we want. An awareness and understanding about ourselves-by investigating out thoughts and feelings-as well as deep insight of things around us are the keys to produce a good poem.
to be continue.
