Ten Tips to Better Writing

  1. There is no bad first draft. Don’t be afraid to start, just start. You can fix it later.
  2. Fix your spelling and grammar, yes, these things are boring, but important.
  3. Create a vibrant opening. Your first paragraph sets the tone and makes the reader want to go on.
  4. Don’t worry too much-writing is subjective. You can’t please all of the people all the time, don’t even try.
  5. Playing on the Internet is just keeping you away what you need to do.
  6. Use proper format.
  7. Use proper tense.
  8. Use the comma correctly.
  9. Rewrite. Writing is rewriting. The first draft is about playing and trying things out.
  10. Create a dynamic ending. Do not simply restate your beginning. You need to give a concluding element that is fresh.

Drama

Drama is a work of literature or composition which delineates life and human activity by means of presenting various actions and dialogues between a group of characters. Drama is designed to be acted on the stage.Dramatic works differ from other prose works in a number of other prose works in a number of other ways as well. Unlike novels and short stories, plays do not usually have narrators to tell  the audiences what a character is thinking or what happened in the past;the audience knows only what the characters reveal. Drama develops primarily by means of dialogue. The plot and the action of drama unfold on the stage  as the characters interact. Playwright employs various techniques to compensate for the absence of a narrator. He/she may use monologues (extended speeches by one character). A monologue  in which a character expresses private thoughts while alone on the stage is called soliloquy. He / she can also use asides- brief comment by an actor who addresses to the audience but not is heard by the others characters- to reveal the thoughts of the speaker.
 Element of drama
  • Theme
  •   Character
  • Staging :In reading a play rather than witnessing it on stage, we have to imagine what it might look like in performance, projecting in our mind’s eye an image of the setting and the props, as well as the movement, gestures, facial expressions etc.
§  Stage direction
§  Costume
§  Prop ( short for properties)
§  Scenery and lighting
§  Music and sound effect
  •  Plot : Is the structure of drama. The traditional arrangement of plot in drama virtually the same as it is in fiction. It follows a pattern of exposition, rising action, crisis(climax),falling action, and resolution.

How to write a short story

Whether you are an aspiring professional writer, the short story is the perfect medium. While writing a novel is a Herculean task, just about any body can craft and, most importantly, finish,a short story. That doesn’t mean that short stories are easy to write, though, and it certainly doesn’t mean that they aren’t as artistic and valuable as novels. With practice, patience, and a passions for writing, they can be every bit as moving and memorable as their much longer cousin.
  STEPS
 1. Read plenty of short stories
nothing can help you “learn” how to write a good short story better than reading good short stories.Take note of the style and how they have used the small amount of words to their advantage. Choose authors that you enjoy, and also choose some of the “classics” pay attention to how the authors develop their characters, write dialogue, and structure their plots.
2. Gather ideas for your story
Inspiration can strike at any time,so carry a notepad with your wherever you go so that you can write down story ideas as they come to you. Most of the time, you’ll just think of small snippets of information (a catastrophic event around which you can build a plot, a character’s name or appearance, etc.),but sometimes you’ll get lucky and whole story will reveal itself to you in a couple of minutes. If you have trouble finding inspiration, or if you need to write a story in a hurry (for a class, for example), learn how to brainstorm.
3. Choose an idea and start with basics of a short story
At the very least, a story should have an exposition(the story leading up to the climax), rising action(events leading to the turning point), a climax ( a turning point in a story brought about by conflict between characters or within a character),falling action(your story begins to conclude), and a resolution(a statisfying ending to the story in which the central conflict is resolved –or not).move backward or forward from your starting idea(it may or may not be the beginning of the story), and ask “what happens next?”or”what happened before this?”
4. Know your characters
For a story to be believable, the characters have to be believable, and their actions should appear inevitable given who they are. In other words, you should know as much as possible about your characters, from what their central motivations are to what their favorite foods are. You won’t include all this information in your story ,but the more you know, the more your characters will come to life, both for you and for the reader. Sometimes it helps just to listen to unimportant conversations between characters in your head, even if it won’t be in the story,
5. Limit the breadth of your story
A novel can occur over millions of years and include a multitude of subplots, a variety of locations, and an army of supporting characters. The main events of a short story should occur in a relatively short period of time(days or even minutes), and you typically won’t be able to develop effectively more than one plot, two or three main characters, and one setting. If your story has much more breadth , it probably needs to be a novelia or novel.
6. Decide who will tell the story
There are three main points of view from which to tell a story :
  • First –person (“I”):  A character in the story tells the story, and the narrators can only tell what they know which will be limited to what they see firsthand or are told by others.
  • Second –person (“you”): The reader is made a character in the story, and and the narration is rarely used.
  • Third –person (“he”or”she”): An outside narrator tells the story, and the narrators can either know everything and explore every character’s thoughts, or be limited to only that which can be observed
7. Start writing
Depending on how thoroughly you’ve sketched out your plot and characters, the actual writing process may simply be one of choosing the right words. Generally , however, writing is arduous. You probably won’t know your characters and plot as well as you thought, but it doesn’t matter. Outlines are not the same as stories, and actually writing a story is the only way to complete one.

How to read and get meaning of a poem

There are a lot of tips suggested by some experts how to read poetry well, here are some of them.
1. Read the poem one straight trought, with no particular expectation; read open mindedly. Let your self experience whatever you find, without worrying any large general and important ideas of the poem. Don’t dwell on a trouble some word-just push on.
2. On the second reading, read for the exact sense of all words, if there are words you don’t understand, look them up in your dictionary.
3. If you read the poem silently to yourself, sounds its words in your mind. Better still, read the poem aloud, or hear someone else reads it. You may discover meanings you didn’t perceive in it before.
4. Paraphrase it. You put your own words what you understand the poem say, restating ideas that seem essential, coming out and starting what the poem may suggest. In doing this, you may work it thourg the whole poem, stanza by stanza, or line by line.
5. Compare your prophase to the poem. Revise it if you find any irrelevance in it. What you have in the last revision-the time when you find there is no more irrelevance between your paraphrase and the poem- is a dependable interpretation.

Basic Elements

  1. Form                                                                                                                                                         The basic elements of a poem are line and stanza. Further distinction must be made between a lone of poetry which pauses most naturally in the end of the line, usually with a completed clause or with a punctuation which signify an ending of sentence, and a line of poetry which runs on the past end of the line into the next one before pausing naturally. The former is called end-stopped,the latter is known as runs on the past end of the line into the next one before pausing naturally. The former is called end-stopped, the latter is known as run-on line.
  2. Diction                                                                                                                                                 Diction or word choice is one of a poet’s greatest tools. By choosing the exact word, not merely something,a poet convinces and draws a reader into a poem. By diction a poet is able to achieve the great power of the combination of sound, sense and meaning.
  3. Sound(Rhyme)                                                                                                                                                          Rhyme is the pattern of repetition of sound in a poem. Here are some examples: time and rhyme, slow and grow, fleet and street, buying and crying etc.
  4. Sense (figure of speech)                                                                                                                  A poet often uses it to state truths that more literal language cannot communicate. Here are some common figures of speech
  • Metaphor : the figure of speech which compares one thing to another directly. Usually a metaphor is created thourgh the uses of some forms of the verb “to be”Example: oh, my love is a red, red rose.
  • Smile calls an attention to the comparison thourgh the use of word “like” or “as”Example: she walks in beauty like the night
  • Personification is the process assigning human characteristics to non human objects, abstraction or ideas.Example: the wind stood up and gave a shot
  • Hyperbola employs excessive exaggeration. It is often used to produce a dramatic effect.Example :  I’ve told him a thousand times
 5.  Meaning (content and message)                                                                                                          When we talk about the meaning of a poem, we are talking primarily about the content of a poem, what it tells, and the significance of it (the message). There are some poems with easily-grabbed meaning and there are some others that are quite difficult to be understood.

definition of poetry

Poetry is written in lines, as verses; it has a fluid margin. When we want to write poems,we usually set out by writing verses, with one line-not to be confused with sentence-following another. Thus,no matter how wide the page, the line remains as we intended. Yet,we must keep in mind that writing a poem is not as simple as it may seem. It is not merely a process of compiling lines with flowery words. Writing a poem means exploring. It means not only recording what we think or feel but investigating those thought, digging deep, striving for a new shivery understanding. Therefore a poet must train his/her “eyes” to see what is unseen; to search for the particular, mot the general;to dive, not to swim. Parallel to that, the simplest way to get an insight of the unseen or the particular is to read(and reread) poems we like, the poems that give us a new understanding about a thing and encourage us to write our own.Elizabeth Bishop said,”Read a lot of poetry-all the time…. Read Campion, Hebert, Pope,Tennyson,Coleridge-anything at all almost that’s good, from the past-until you find out what you really like,by yourself. Even if you try imitate it exactly-it will come out quite differently…” In sum,to write a poem is not merely to express our feeling and/or thoughts in the way we want. An awareness and understanding about ourselves-by investigating out thoughts and feelings-as well as deep insight of things around us are the keys to produce a good poem. to be continue.
